In business, connections are everything. Who you know in a room is often more important than who you are. Here are some tips to making those connections.

Networking is the key to successful business. For that purpose, networking events have become a weekly staple for most businesses. But for some, the thought of walking into a room full of people they don’t know, striking up a conversation with them, is not only intimidating, but a fate worse than death. After strategically choosing the appropriate networking events, becoming fully prepared for these events, lift the weight from your shoulders and network with the best of them.

Goal Setting

First of all, you must attack a networking event with the right mindset and specific goals so you can go in with focus and a cause. With this kind of direction, the experience can become easier and more enjoyable.

Be Yourself

The next step is easy, be yourself. Being genuine is one thing that people often forget when faced with these situations. The pressure of being surrounded by strangers can often make people feel like they need to act or play a role. They are so worried about making the right impression, that they completely forget who they are and why they are there. With that in mind, focus on being your best you. You are there to make connections, too build relationships, and potentially gain clients, so establish yourself as an expert. Your confidence and knowledge about your field will leave a lasting impression.

Make Yourself and Your Purpose Known

At networking events you want people to want to know you. Articulating what you are looking for and how you can help them gives you the position of control. Even if the person you are engaged in conversation with has no direct need you can fill, they may know someone who does and will likely make that introduction if they understand your value.

Listen

Be a good listener. People love to talk about themselves and their business, take advantage of that. Get a feeling whether or not these are people you can see yourself working with, analyze their business needs and determine if you can fit them. Acquire all the information that can be valuable for you, and if it looks like a possible opportunity for you, ask questions to let them know you are interested in what they have to say and offer.

Enjoy and Follow Up

Most importantly, don’t burn any bridges. Smile, laugh and enjoy yourself. Treating everyone you encounter with the highest regard will reflect well on you and your company. Follow up with these people quickly after the event to brand yourself in their minds. This will prove to be the most effective in building lasting relationships, contacts and clients.

Great suggestions of what to do at a networking event. Sounds like what's covered "I'm at a Networking Event--Now What???" by Sandy Jones-Kaminski. She might send you a copy if you want to write about it? You both are very much on the same page!
